Louis

An open-source legal AI workbench you can host yourself.

An open-source project by Stephane Boghossian

What It Is

A workbench you can host yourself: a chat assistant, a document workspace, redlining, a clause library and a risk scanner. It also ships an MCP server.

Why It Was Built

Many legal teams cannot send client data through an intermediary. Louis tests how far a self-hosted workbench with your own model keys can go for solo practitioners, in-house teams and boutique firms.

How It Works

  • A web app for the interface and an API server behind it, with Supabase for sign-in and data.
  • Files live in any S3-compatible bucket.
  • You pick the model per message from Claude, Gemini or OpenAI, and your own API keys override the server defaults.
  • An MCP server exposes the calculators, the clause and citation lookups and the risk scanner to any MCP-aware AI client.
