Adoption & maturity

Legal AI Maturity Model

The five stages of legal AI maturity and where firms sit across them.

IllustrativeUpdated 2026-07-08

As a directional scenario, the maturity curve is still left-loaded: an estimated 65% of firms sit in the No AI, Experimenting, or Piloting stages, while only 13% reach full transformation with enterprise-wide adoption and dedicated AI teams. The largest single group, at 28%, is Stage 2 (Experimenting) - ad-hoc individual use of general-purpose tools like ChatGPT rather than governed, legal-specific systems. For most firms, the gap is less about access to AI and more about the governance and workflow redesign needed to move from occasional use to Stage 4-5 scaling.
